Non Destructive opening of Safe Locks MLA Expo course image

Course Tutor: Martin Newton

Martin, who along with his wife Sue runs Safe Ventures, is a well-known and highly respected safe engineer.

Dates & Times of Course:

Friday 2nd October, 10:30 – 17:00 (F1)
Saturday 3rd October, 10:30 -17:00 (Sa1)

Course Duration: 1 Day

Course Content:

During the day you will 100% learn how to open:

  • Willenhall CT12 Post Office Lock
  • Mauer President 71111
  • Stuv 419.92
  • Cawi 2618

Maybe the first step from locksmith to safe engineer.

Safe container security seems to be ever more, a growing business. More safes being sold means, inevitably, that more safes are required to be opened.

The majority of safes sold into small businesses and private homes are under £10K rated. As we know safe manufactures make safes, they don’t make locks they buy them from lock manufacturers.

Historically there has always been a popular lock for a specific period of time.

In the 60’s & 70’s it was Milners Curtained Key Lock, over time word got out that a drill point of 63mm down and 18 mm left of key way center would be right on the money. Drilling the hole proved to be the tough part.

In the 80’s & 90’s it was what was colloquially referred to as the’ Post Office’ lock.

A non-curtained 7 lever lock such as the Willenhall CT12 or one of its many copies. These locks were also drilled but picking with a two in one ‘Hobbs’ pick became a good option.

Now it is the era of the non curtained double bit key lock. Most commonly the Mauer President 71111 or the Stuv 419.92. closely followed by the Cawi equivalent. The reason they are so commonly used is that they are already VDRS or UL rated, they are cheap and psychologically they offer a better or more complex level of security.

For those locksmiths that want to, stepping into the fringes of Safe Engineer is not as difficult as it sounds and that is what this one day course is all about. There are tools and methods that exist these days that allow these locks to be opened far more easily than you may think.

During the day our trainer will cover the following.

  • Picking open the 7 Lever Willenhall CT 12 using a two in one pick.
A full explanation of the problem with each aspect being fully demonstrated.
  • Decoding and opening the Mauer President 71111
This lock is a simple problem to overcome using the logic based Safe Ventures decode system. The tool will be fully explained, demonstrated and available for hands on use.
  • Decoding the Stuv 419.92 using the Safe Ventures visual decoding system.
This is also a really easy procedure to follow it will be fully explained and demonstrated.

If time allows we will also look at the various pin and cam systems available for some of the more sophisticated curtained safe locks such as Chubb 6K174 or SMP 9 lever.

The aim of this one day course is to provide those attending with an insight into the tools and methods used to non-destructively open these locks as well as allowing participants to have hands on use of the tools.

Please feel free to bring your own locks or locked up containers secured by these locks and we will open them up for you on the day. Our trainer will be bringing some of his for you to open.
